Turning 60 is a milestone worth celebrating in a special way. For one unforgettable birthday, a my siblings chose to mark the occasion with a four-day hike through the Dentelles de Montmirail, a striking mountain range in South France. Covering roughly 12 kilometers each day, the journey combined physical challenge, breathtaking scenery, and quality family time. This post shares the highlights and practical details of that adventure, offering inspiration for anyone looking to celebrate a special event with an active, nature-filled experience.

Setting Out: From Vaison-la-Romaine to Le Barroux

The adventure began in the historic town of Vaison-la-Romaine, known for its Roman ruins and charming streets. The first day’s hike led from Vaison to Le Barroux, a small village perched on a hill with a medieval castle overlooking the valley. The route offered a mix of shaded forest paths and open views of vineyards and rocky peaks.

Walking about 12 kilometers, we enjoyed the fresh air and the peaceful rhythm of the trail. Along the way, they passed through quiet hamlets and fields dotted with wildflowers. The climb to Le Barroux rewarded us with panoramic views and a chance to explore the village’s narrow streets and ancient fortress.

Tips for Day One:

  • Start early to avoid midday heat, especially in summer.

  • Wear sturdy hiking shoes as some paths are rocky.

  • Carry enough water and snacks, as services along the trail are limited.

  • Take time to explore Le Barroux’s castle and local cafés.

Day Two: From Le Barroux to Vacqueyras

The second day took the us from Le Barroux to Vacqueyras, a village famous for its wine production. This section of the hike passed through rolling vineyards and olive groves, with the Dentelles’ jagged peaks forming a dramatic backdrop.

The trail was slightly less steep than the first day but still offered plenty of variety. We stopped at several viewpoints to admire the landscape and capture photos. Vacqueyras welcomed us with its quaint streets and opportunities to sample local wines.

Highlights of Day Two:

  • Walking through vineyards with views of the Dentelles’ limestone ridges.

  • Visiting Vacqueyras’ wine cellars for tastings.

  • Enjoying local Provençal cuisine in village restaurants.

Day Three: From Vacqueyras to Sablet

On the third day, the hike continued from Vacqueyras to Sablet, another picturesque village nestled among vineyards. This route featured a mix of forest trails and open countryside, with occasional glimpses of Mont Ventoux in the distance.

The terrain was varied, with some gentle climbs and descents. We appreciated the peaceful atmosphere and the chance to spot local wildlife, including birds and butterflies. Sablet’s charming stone houses and lively market provided a warm welcome after the day’s walk.

Practical Advice for Day Three:

  • Bring a hat and sunscreen for exposed sections.

  • Plan a stop at Sablet’s market if hiking on market day.

  • Consider a short detour to visit nearby chapels or viewpoints.

Final Stretch: From Sablet Back to Vaison-la-Romaine

The last day brought us full circle, returning from Sablet to Vaison-la-Romaine. This final leg offered a mix of familiar landscapes and new perspectives on the Dentelles. The trail passed through vineyards, small farms, and quiet lanes.

Completing the loop felt rewarding, with a sense of accomplishment and connection to the region. Back in Vaison, we celebrated with a meal featuring local specialties, reflecting on the shared experience and the beauty of the Dentelles.

Suggestions for the Last Day:

  • Keep a steady pace to enjoy the scenery without rushing.
